May Journal #1

And from our wedding!

Today, May 5, Hal and I celebrate 60 years of a shared life! I’m filled with gratitude for this blessing. Here are a few photos of us through the years.

Just 1 and 2 months after Hal’s stroke. Such a miracle he is alive.
These 8 years are a special blessing.

Dear friends,

Happy May.  At last, some warmth is in the air!  It feels wonderful to be outside.

It’s been 4 months now since I started this twice a week blog. Before January, my practice, for decades really, was to meditate most mornings and then spend some time talking with Aaron, often writing both our words but with no concern for typos. With the blog, I’m still doing that, but much energy and time is going into writing something edited and clean to post. I’m a 2 fingered typist so typing is slow for me, and cleaning up the typos takes lots of time.  In 4 months, I have had just one email from a reader telling me what I wrote was meaningful. That’s fine; I didn’t request feedback. But now, after 4 months, roughly 32 journals, maybe 90 -120 hours of writing and editing,   I turn to you. Is this something useful to you/ to the sangha – for me to continue, in which case I’m happy to do so, or are there better uses for my time? Please email me at  deepspringbarbara@gmail.com and share your thoughts.

For May I’m going to do something different. Twenty-five years ago I wrote a chapter for an anthology called “Being Bodies; Buddhist Women on the Paradox of Embodiment” (Still available on amazon)

In 2018 I was invited to write a chapter for a sequel. Once written, I worked extensively with the editor, we had a final copy of my chapter, and then Covid came into the world, and Shambhala decided they could not proceed with publication. In 2024 my chapter was returned to me for my own use. I’ve pondered what to do with it. I may send it to a publication like Tricycle.  Meanwhile, this month I’m going to take time off from journaling into a blog, and share this chapter with you for several weeks, 6 to 8 installments, however it breaks down best. My topic, Path of Sacred Darkness, is something we have been addressing in depth in classes and retreats. I hope the chapter will be of help to your life and practice.

With love, Barbara
