Unless otherwise indicated, the following classes and programs meet at Deep Spring Center in Ann Arbor.

The Meditation Program

The foundation of our meditation program is Insight Meditation (Vipassana). It is a simple and direct practice: the moment-to-moment investigation of the mind/body process through calm, focused awareness. It allows us to experience sensations, emotions, thoughts and consciousness with greater clarity and balance. This clarity frees our mind from conditioned patterns of self-centeredness, negativity and confusion; it opens our heart to deeper wisdom and compassion. This process of opening, non-judgmentally and compassionately to ourselves, moves from the sitting period to the whole of our lives. We begin to know each moment as practice for our growth toward wholeness and harmony. We balance insight practice with lovingkindness and a deepening awareness of our true nature, which is eternal and present now. Although the practices are derived from Buddhist teachings, no special religious beliefs are necessary; we perform no religious rituals. The meditation practices are suitable for those of any or no religion. In classes and retreat, we also work with other forms of meditation that nurture non-dual awareness and open the heart.

Class Levels

People  who take classes at Deep Spring come from different backgrounds and experience. To help students make a decision based on their personal experience and comfort level we have created a system to help them choose which class(es) would suit them best. Use these as a guide and if you have any questions contact the teacher or the Deep Spring office at om@deepspring.org.

Class/Program Fees and Dana

Many classes/programs at Deep Spring Center have a building fee, which goes directly to support the rental and operation of the facility. The rate is $7 per week of class, which equates to $49 for a 7-week session and $70 for a 10-week session. See specific class listing for detail. No one will be denied participation for financial reasons.

All Deep Spring teachers offer their time on a dana basis, joyfully sharing the teachings. Your free-will offerings to the teachers are welcomed.

With your support, we can continue to offer a range of programs and activities at Deep Spring Center.

Dana (pronounced “dah-na”) is a Pali word meaning “gift” or “giving.” It is closely related to the virtue of generosity and is expressed in many  forms—the offering and sharing of our time, energy, knowledge/expertise, material items and financial resources. Dana is a purely volitional act of giving in which we develop our ability to let go, convey our compassion and caring, demonstrate our commitment, and acknowledge our interdependence and connectedness.

Notes about Registration

To register for Deep Spring classes and programs, please submit program/building fee, your contact information—name, address, phone, email—and the class/program name to Deep Spring Center. Registration handled by another organization/individual will be so noted in the program’s description.

Mindfulness of the Dhammas
Ann Barden
Level 2 -
Continuing
Wednesday 5 sessions

Offered as dana.
Pre-registration required.
In the Satipatthana Sutta, the Buddha introduced the four frames of reference, the Four Foundations within which we practice mindfulness. These are the body, the feeling characteristics of experience, the mind and the dhammas. The dhammas are five sets of human experiences which we observe mindfully in order to penetrate deeply the nature of reality – it is impermanence, unsatisfactoriness and selfishness. The sets are the Five Hindrances, the Five Aggregates of Clinging, the Six Sense Spheres, the Seven Factors of Enlightenment, and the Four Noble Truths. This class is appropriate for one who has had at least beginning meditation instruction and may be introduced to these teachings for the first time. It is also appropriate for an intermediate student who wishes to review the teaching and look deeply at more subtle manifestations of these experiences. For more information or questions contact Ann Barden at 734.994.1026 or bardena@comcast.net

Deepening Practice and Dharma Insight
Insight Practice and Integration of Practice Into Our Lives
Barbara Brodsky and Frank Levey
Level 2/3
Continuing
Wednesday 8 sessions
$56 (building fee) with an opportunity to offer dana to the teacher.
Pre-registation required.
This class is open to anyone beyond Level 1 who has or aspires to a daily practice.
The class will sit together each class, then go around to each member to hear what has been happening in practice these 2 weeks. Barbara and Frank will offer guidance to deepen and sustain practice, and integrate practice into our lives, and also invite class members to share their own thoughts. Questions will be addressed. Class members will each have a "Dharma Buddy" with whom they will talk in the week between class meetings, to further support regular practice. Beyond that, the class has no specific agenda, but will draw its direction on the needs of the group. No formal class book will be assigned but the teachers will likely suggest some reading based on the directions our discussions take us. Our hope is to create a mini-sangha where we can discuss and deepen practice, deepen in understanding of dharma and it's place in our lives, and find support.

It's All In Your Mind, Or Is It? Mindfulness On and Off the Cushion
Erica Dutton & Mary Grannan

Level 2 - Continuing
Saturday 6 classes
$59 ($69 outside AA school district). Held at Deep Spring Center.
The practice of mindfulness can lead to deepening your meditation practice and one where the richness of life is brought center stage. For most of us, we spend a considerable part of our day on automatic pilot, lost in thought or planning for the future. Meanwhile, the moment right in front of us goes unnoticed. This class focuses on deepening your mindfulness practice by being aware of the body, mind, feelings and the world around you rather than being adrift or assailed by events that you react to before you have time to think. The class is open to meditation students who are familiar with Vipassana meditation and who are ready to develop a regular meditation practice. For more information about the class content, please contact Erica Dutton at 734.677.3056 or Mary Grannan at 734.453.8915.
